Cal State Northridge Seeded Fifth At Big West Tournament

Northridge, Calif. – If 14th-ranked Cal State Northridge has plans to make the NCAA Tournament, the Matadors will have to face and beat other nationally-ranked teams at this weekend's Big West Women's Water Polo Tournament at the UC Irvine Anteater Aquatics Complex.

CSUN is seeded fifth in the eight-team tournament that begins on Friday (April 26) and runs through Saturday (April 27) and Sunday (April 28).

Cal State Northridge (21-11, 3-4 BWC) will face fourth-seed Long Beach State (23-6, 4-3 BWC) in a quarterfinal game on Friday at 1:45 pm. If the Matadors win, they will face either Hawai'i (18-9, 6-1 BWC) or Pacific (16-13, 1-6 BWC) on Saturday (April 27) at 3:30 p.m. If CSUN loses, it will face the loser of the Hawai'i vs Pacific game on Saturday (April 27) at Noon.

CSUN has faced tenth-ranked Long Beach State twice this year with the 49ers winning both games. On Feb. 10 at the UCSD Invitational, Long Beach State scored a non-league 10-8 double overtime. A Lindsy Nelson goal with 3:29 to play gave the Matadors an 8-7 lead, but the 49ers tied the game with 2:55 left on the clock and eventually sent the game into overtime at 8-8.

Long Beach State scored a goal in each overtime while CSUN was held scoreless. Jenny Jamison and Lindsy Nelson each scored two goals for CSUN. Kiernan Davis had ten saves for the Matadors. Chelsea Parks scored five goals for Long Beach State while Christina Kotsia added a trio of scores.

On April 6 in a Big West contest, Long Beach State scored an 11-5 victory over the Matadors. Chelsea Parks proved again to be LBS's chief offensive threat with four goals. Kelcie Ferreira led Cal State Northridge with two goals.

Lindsy Nelson leads the CSUN attack with 67 goals (sixth-best for a single season at CSUN), fourth-best in the Big West Conference. Kiernan Davis has collected 260 saves this year, third-best in the conference and eighth-best for a single season in school history.

Hawai'i (18-9, 6-1 BWC) is the top-seed in the Big West Tournament followed by #2 seed UC Irvine (19-8, 6-1 BWC), #3 seed San Diego State (21-9, 5-2 BWC), #4 seed Long Beach State (23-6, 4-3 BWC), #5 seed Cal State Northridge (21-11, 3-4 BWC), #6 UC Santa Barbara (19-13, 2-5 BWC), #7 UC Davis (14-15, 1-6 BWC) and #8 Pacific (16-13, 1-6 BWC).
