#17 Cal State Northridge Defeats Sonoma State, 11-4

Santa Barbara, Ca. – Lindsy Nelson scored a career-high seven goals to lead 17th ranked Cal State Northridge to an 11-4 victory over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.

Nelson's seven goals broke her previous career-high of five goals set against Bucknell and Cal State San Bernardino last year.

The Matadors dominated the game from the opening whistle. CSUN jumped to a 3-1 first period lead and out scored Sonoma State in the next three periods; 2-1 in the second period, 4-1 in the third period and 2-1 in the final period.

Kelcie Ferreira scored two goals for Cal State Northridge.

The Matadors chalked up a 3-1 record in the two-day tournament.

Earlier in the day, Cal State Northridge scored early and often and totally dominated Pomona-Pitzer, 19-7.

The Matadors jumped to a 5-1 first period lead, and never eased up on the scoring pedal. Cal State Northridge added another six goals in the second period to take an 11-4 halftime lead.

Back for more came Cal State Northridge as they easily sifted through the Pomona defense to score five more goals to take a 16-5 third period lead.

Nine different CSUN players scored at least one goal. Six players scored two or more goals. Leah Janke led the Matadors with four goals while Lindsy Nelson and Marisa Young added three goals each.
