Montreal, Canada – Dr. Marcelo Leonardi, who will be entering his fourth season as head coach of the Cal State Northridge women's water polo team in 2013, recently served as an assistant coach for Team USA that won the UANA Pan American Junior (Under-19) Championship at the Olympic Park Sport Centre (the host venue for the 1976 Olympic Games).
The victory qualifies the United States for the Junior World championship next year.
Team USA won the gold medal with a 7-6 victory over Canada in the championship game. It was Canada's only loss of the tournament in seven games. Team USA also finished the tournament with a 6-1 record.
The American victory avenged a 8-7 loss to the Canadians in round robin play. Six countries competed in the women's division; the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil.
In addition to Team USA's 7-6 over Canada in the gold medal game, the Americans posted victories over Mexico (16-2); Brazil (14-10 & 12-5); Venezuela (19-4); and Puerto Rico (21-6).
