Heidi Pettinger Named Big West Player of the Week; CSUN Travels To Cal Lutheran Invitational

Northridge, Calif. – Heidi Pettinger, who spearheaded CSUN's 10-7 upset victory over then sixth-ranked Hawaii last weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational, has been named Big West Water Polo Player of the Week.

Pettinger, a senior, scored three goals and added an assist over Hawai'i. Overall, Pettinger scored four goals and added four steals in the four-game UCI Invitational.

Stop if you've heard this before … Another road trip, another water polo tournament.

This time, the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge Matadors travel this weekend (March 2-3) to the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The Matadors will play two games on Friday (3/2) and two games on Sunday (3/3). On Friday at 11:45 a.m., CSUN faces Fresno Pacific followed by a 3:30 p.m. contest against Concordia. On Saturday, CSUN faces St. Francis at 8:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. encounter against Cal State Monterey Bay.

Friday's game will be played at the Samuelson Aquatics Center at Cal Lutheran. Saturday's games will be played at Oaks Christian High School.

This will be the fifth tournament Cal State Northridge has played in this year. Thus far in 2012, the Matadors have participated in the UCSB Invitational, the Cal Baptist Invitational, the UC San Diego Invitational, the UC Irvine Invitational and now at the Cal Lutheran Invitational.

Cal State Northridge is currently 4-11. Twelve of its 15 games have been against teams that are nationally-ranked higher than the Matadors.  

Three players have scored in double-digits in scoring for the Matadors this year. Freshman Marisa Young has emerged as the team leader in scoring with 24 goals. Young has scored at least one goal in eleven of the team's 15 games. Young, who graduated from Fountain Valley High School, has scored at least two goals in seven games. That includes five goals against #17 Hartwick, and three goals against fifth-ranked San Diego State, #10 UC Santa Barbara and a second game against Hartwick.

Other double-digit scorers are Jenny Jamison with 23 goals and Lindsy Nelson with 13 goals.

Dana Harvey, a senior, has collected 110 saves in 13 games this year. Harvey is averaging 9.21 saves per game.

Cal State Northridge plays its first home games on March 13 against Bucknell (2:00 p.m.) and Occidential (7:00 p.m.).

Ranking Review
Several Big West Conference schools are nationally-ranked in this week's CWPA national poll … UC Irvine is ranked eighth, followed by #10 UC Santa Barbara, #14 Cal State Northridge, #16 UC Davis, and #19 Long Beach State.
