#19 Cal State Northridge Falls To Big West Rival UC Irvine, 9-4
Santa Barbara, Ca. – Sixth-ranked UC Irvine relied on its defense to hold 19th-ranked Cal State Northridge scoreless in the first half, and that helped the Anteaters record a 9-4 victory over the Matadors during Sunday afternoon action at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
Both teams played stellar defense in the first period with UC Irvine holding a 1-0 advantage. Three goals in the second period gave UCI a 4-0 half time lead.
The Cal State Northridge offense got in gear in the third period, scoring three times. UC Irvine led 5-0 before the Matadors scored their three goals while holding the Anteaters to only one goal. Two of the CSUN three goals were scored by Leah Janke.
UCI led 6-3 at the end of the third period.
Jamison scored nine goals in the four games during the two-day UCSB Tournament. Jamison scored only eight goals in 22 games last year.
CSUN is now 1-3 on the year. UC Irvine is 3-1.
Earlier in the day, tenth-ranked Indiana jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first period and held on to defeat Cal State Northridge, 8-7, at the UC Santa Barbara Water Polo Invitational.
Jakie Kohli was Indiana's chief offensive threat to open the game as she scored the Hoosiers first two goals at 5:19 and at 4:32. The Hoosiers followed up with two more goals to take a 4-0 lead with 3:05 left in the opening frame.
Marisa Young broke IU's scoring momentum when the freshman scored at 2:51 in the first period.
Neither team scored in the second period.
Trailing 6-1 with 2:52 remaining in the third period, Cal State Northridge caught momentum scoring five straight goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:02 remaining in the game. Four of CSUN's five goals were scored by Jenny Jamison, who on Saturday scored four goals in two games against Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara. Jamison's fourth goal of the game tied the contest at 6-6.
However, back came the nationally-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Two goals by Amanda Redfern at 2:37 and the insurance goal with 59 seconds remaining gave Indiana its fourth victory of the season in six games.
