Sydney Sonoda & Whitney Delgado Named Water Polo All-Americans

Northridge, Calif. - Congratulations are in order for Whitney Delgado and Sydney Sonoda, who were named Honorable Mention All-Americans on Tuesday (7/19/11) by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a second straight season.

Also during the 2011 season, Delgado and Sonoda were named first team All-Big West Conference for a second straight year.

Delgado was not only the CSUN team leader with 76 goals, but also tops in the Big West Conference. Her 76 goals were second-best for a single season in school history, only four goals behind her school record of 80 set last year.

Delgado, a junior in 2011, now has 191 career goals in three seasons, second-best in school history behind school record holder Allison Brookes (222 goals, 2005-08).

Sonoda, a senior in 2011, finished third on the team in scoring this year with 53 goals (#8 in the Big West Conference, #9 for a single season at Cal State Northridge).

Sonoda's 114 ejections drawn was tops on the team in 2011.

Sonoda finished her four-year Matador career with 143 goals, fifth-best in school history.

Delgado and Sonoda were one of eight Big West Conference water polo student-athletes to be honored as All-Americans by the ACWPC. The others were UC Irvine's Cortney Collyer (third team) and Honorable Mention selections Jessy Cardey (UC Irvine), Dara Tawarahara (Pacific), Carmen Eggert (UC Davis), Caitlin Haskell (UC Irvine) and Danielle Warde (UC Irvine).

Delgado was not only the team leader with 76 goals, but also tops in the Big West Conference and second-best for a single season in school history ... Her 76 goals was also fourth-best for a single season in Big West Conference history ... Delgado scored at least one goal in 32 of the team's 37 games ... In the last two seasons, Delgado has scored two or more goals in 52 games ... Scored two or more goals in 22 games this season ... Scored a career-high seven goals against Cal State Bakersfield (2/12/11) ... Has dished out 90 career assists, ninth-best in school history ... Fourth on the team in assists (40) and steals (30).

Her 114 ejections drawn was tops on the team in 2011 ... Her 26 steals this year were fifth-best on the team ... Had 101 career steals, eighth-best in school history ... Collected 27 assists, fifth-best on the team.
