NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge opened its final homestand of the 2012 regular season in dominating fashion as the Matadors swept UC Riverside 25-14, 25-12, 25-17 Wednesday night at The Matadome.
With the victory, CSUN (20-10, 11-6 Big West) earned 20 wins for the first time since the 1996 season. That season, the Matadors finished 22-11 under head coach Dr. Lian Lu.
On Wednesday, junior Mahina Haina led the way with 12 kills while hitting .417 in 24 attacks. As a team, the Matadors hit a blistering .506 committing just four hitting errors the entire match. Casey Hinger and Britney Graff each added eight kills to the CSUN cause with Hinger hitting .467 and Graff checking in at .389.
Hinger also added a match-high six blocks while Graff recorded a career-high three solo blocks. The Matadors limited the Highlanders to a .110 hititng clip while out-pointing UCR 58.5-30.0.
CSUN did not hit less than .407 in any of the three sets and no Matador hitter hit less than Graff's .387. Cieana Stinson and setter Sydney Gedryn each chipped in six kills with both hitting .667. Gedryn also handed out 31 assists to go with four blocks and four digs.
The Matadors trailed 1-0 and 2-1 early in set one and did not trail again the remainder of the match. CSUN led by as many as 10 (22-12) in the opening frame and was not threatened in the final two sets.
Ashley Cox paced the Highlanders with 12 kills but hit just .067. Amanda Vialpando added nine kills (.259) but no other UCR hitter managed more than three kills in the loss.
Cal State Northridge concludes the regular season Saturday night as the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. The Matadors will pay tribute to seniors Monica McFarland and Cindy Ortiz prior to the match.
