NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge capped the 2011 regular season with a straight set (25-19, 25-16, 27-25) win over the visiting Air Force Falcons in a non-conference matinee Saturday afternoon in The Matadome.
The Matadors (16-13), who came in having won seven of their last 10 matches, increased the number to eight in their last 11 with Saturday's win. CSUN also reached 16 wins in a season for the first time since 2006.
Sophomores Natalie Allen and Mahina Haina each had a team-high nine kills to pace the Matadors. Allen also served up a pair of aces to go with three digs while Haina added three digs and one block. Freshman Casey Hinger added eight kills and four blocks and sophomore Britney Graff chipped in seven kills while hitting a match-high .700 in 10 attacks.
Northridge utilized two setters in the finale as Sydney Gedryn had 17 assists and senior Sam Orlandini posted 16 assists and three kills in her final match. Matador libero Cindy Ortiz capped an impressive season with 10 digs while serving three of the Matadors' six aces.
After winning the first two sets fairly handily, the Matadors had to battle to capture the straight set win. After leading early 9-6, the Falcons engineered a 9-5 run to open up a 15-11 lead. After Allen's attack was stuffed, Air Force looked to be on the verge of forcing a fourth set leading 22-18. A Cami Richan kill gave the Falcons two set points at 24-22 but an Allen kill and a Falcon hitting error knotted the score at 24-24. A Kristen Holt kill gave Air Force another set point at 25-24, but an ensuing Hinger kill was followed by another Falcon hitting error before Hinger and Orlandini to stuff an Air Force attack on match point.
For the Falcons, Ayesha Hein had a team-high nine kills while hitting .750 and Richan added eight kills.
