AUSTIN, Texas - Carl Horsley highlighted day one of the NCAA West Preliminary Round as the junior sprinted to a lifetime-best 10.23 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 100 meters Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Big West champion at 100 and 200 meters, Horsley ran in the sixth and final heat and clocked the second-fastest time of the heat (10.23) to finish second in the heat and eighth overall. The time for the junior from Oakland shatters his previous best by .23 seconds and breaks the CSUN record set by Joe Criner (10.30) in 1998. Horsley ran a previous lifetime-best 10.46 in winning the conference championship two weeks ago.
Horsley advances to the 100 meter quarterfinal round on Friday and will also run in the first round of the 200 meters later on Friday evening.
"The day was definitely highlighted by Carl's school record in the 100," said head coach Avery Anderson. "That was a great race, he executed the race plan I gave him perfectly. When you advance to the next round at a meet like this it just gets tougher and you have to do it again."
In the women's 100 meters, Le'Shel Vines and Hafsatu Kamara finished 30th and 31st respectively in the opening round. Vines ran 11.68 to place fifth in her heat while Kamara ran 11.69 to finish sixth in her heat. Lexis Lambert ran the 400 meters later on Thursday and finished seventh in her heat in a time of 55.42 which was 39th overall.
All three women have events remaining as both Kamara and Vines will run the 200 meters on Friday and all three are slated to be part of the Matadors' 4x100 relay on Saturday.
Nicholas DiMartino and Donovan Toban opened the championship for the Matadors Thursday in the long jump. DiMartino wound up 27th with a best of 23-11.75 (7.31) which came on his first attempt of the competition. Toban fouled on all three attempts and did not post a mark but still has the triple jump competition coming up on Saturday.
"The weather was weird early so it made it tough for the guys to get in the board," said Anderson. "Both jumped far enough to get into Nationals but scratched the jumps they needed to advance. Still they came out and competed hard but this is the best of the best and it's hard to advance for a reason."
