NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge track & field has advanced a total of 17 men and women to the NCAA West Preliminary Round to be held at the University of Texas in Austin May 23-25.

With 10 women and seven men, the Matadors will send their largest contingent since the NCAA realigned its regional format into two regions (West - Texas, East - North Carolina). CSUN qualified a school record 24 athletes into the 2009 NCAA West Regional in Oregon which was one of four regionals held across the country.

"I'm glad to be sending such a large group of well-deserving student-athletes to the NCAA's," said CSUN head coach Avery Anderson. "To have 17 athletes qualify in 24 individual events shows not only the caliber of talent on our team but that they were willing to work for this. This meet will display the best of the best in the country, you don't get there on talent alone. All year we've worked to get to this championship time of the season and as we saw at the Big West Championships, our work is paying off."

Matador sprinters Carl Horsley, Hafsatu Kamara and Le'Shel Vines figure to be the busiest Matador athletes at the meet as the three have all qualified in the 100 and 200 meters as well at the 4x100 relay. Nicholas DiMartino, Donovan Toban and Lexis Lambert will also compete in multiple events as DiMartino qualified in the long jump and will be a member of the 4x100 relay. Toban is scheduled to compete in the triple jump and will join DiMartino in the long jump while Lambert will run the 400 meters as well as the 4x100 relay.

Tiana Webberley and Cydney Leath, both Big West runners-up in the pole vault and triple jump respectively, also have qualified in those events as did Marissa Rossi in the triple jump and Monique Griffiths in the discus. Marie Veale is also part of the 4x100 relay while Samantha Dirks and Chiza Eze will also be available in the 4x100 relay pool.

In addition to Horsley, DiMartino and Toban on the men's side, Tucker Weathers has qualified in the shot put while Derrick Harris and Darquis Rucker have qualified in the 4x100 relay with Khalid Jones also available for the relay.

A complete breakdown of the Cal State Northridge athletes competing as well as final time schedule will be posted on GoMatadors.com next week prior to the regional meet.
