NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Cal State Northridge junior Anna Yang was named the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. In action last week, Yang won her third-straight singles contest and improved to 8-6 on the season with a straight-set victory over UC Irvine's Stephanie Hammel.
Yang, who is originally from San Diego, defeated Hammel 6-2, 7-6 to score the Matadors' only point in singles play against the Anteaters. In doubles, she teamed with Nigora Sirojiddinova to post an 8-4 victory in their No. 2 contest as CSUN swept the three doubles contests against UC Irvine. For the season, Yang and Sirojiddinova are 8-6 as a tandem.
The weekly award is the first of Yang's career. She sports a career singles record of 26-19 (.578) and a doubles mark of 35-19 (.648). Her doubles winning percentage ranks among the school's all-time top 10 and she earned All-Big West Doubles First Team honors in 2010.
Yang became the second Matador in as many weeks to earn the league's weekly honors, following teammate senior Jennifer Sher, who won the award on Mar. 28.
The Matadors and Yang play UC Davis on April 4 and Pacific on April 5. Northridge's 2012 home finale will be on Sunday, April 15 vs. Cal Poly.
CSUN will then travel to face LMU (April 17) and San Diego State (April 21) in a pair of non-confernence matches before heading to the Big West Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., from April 26-29.
