CSUN Hammers CSUB 8-0 in Five Innings
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (4-8) defeated CSU Bakersfield 8-0 in five innings Sunday in its final game of the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., at Smith Family Field. The Matador offense scored in every inning and registered its first run-rule victory since 2010 while senior Shelly Taittossed five strong innings of one-hit softball.
In the second inning, CSUN seized control of the game. Leann Lopez walked to start the frame and moved ot second on a sac bunt by Ariana Wassmer. Tiffini Lucero then drew a walk and Abby Linn dropped a single in front of the catcher to load the bases.
That brought up senior Korinne Randazzo, who cleared the bases with a grand slam over the left field fence. She now has a team-high seven RBIs on the season.
In the third inning, Lopez laced a two-out double to left field and came around to score on an RBI single by Wassmer. CSUN loaded the bases in the fourth and Linn scored on a wild pitch before the rally ended.
Finally, Lopez drew a walk, stole second and scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning to conclude the Matadors' scoring for the day. Lopez scored a career-high three runs in the victory.
Meanwhile, Tait (2-2) picked up the win with five solid innings. She allowed just one hit, a single in the fifth inning, to go with four strikeouts and zero walks.
Northridge returns to the field next week with five more games in Northern California at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. From Feb. 22-24, the Matadors will face the host Broncos, San Jose State, Fresno State, Idaho State and Saint Mary's.
