CSUN Softball Falls Twice to Oregon State
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (5-23) lost 13-1 (five innings) and 5-1 to Oregon State in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Matador Diamond. Leann Lopez had two RBIs and Mia Pagano gave a strong effort in the circle, but the Matador offense could not keep pace with the Beavers.
In game one, Oregon State got to CSUN starter Brianna Elder (1-2) early. After scoring one run and leaving the bases loaded to end the first, Oregon State struck for seven unearned runs in the second to chase Elder from the game. In taking the loss, she allowed eight hits and had two walks and a strikeout.
At the plate, Lopez doubled home Jaci Carlsen with two outs in the second inning. However, she was tagged out at third on the play trying to stretch the hit to a triple. Otherwise, Tina Andreana and Aryn Feickert only gave up hits to Abby Linn and Mikayla Thielges and Oregon State won in five innings.
In the second game, Oregon State scored twice in the first but CSUN answered with one of its own in its half of the inning. Lopez had an RBI single to score Samantha Sloniker but the Matadors left the bases loaded to end the inning.
From there, Pagano (4-11) kept Northridge in the game with some solid pitching. She retired the side in order several times in the middle innings. After CSUN nearly tied things in the seventh, Pagano finally gave up three more runs, two coming on a two-run, two-out triple.
In taking the loss, Pagano scattered nine hits and had three strikeouts and zero walks. Paige Hall tossed the final 6.2 innings for Oregon State, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts to earn the win.
CSUN hits the road this weekend for its first Big West Conference series of the 2012 season. The Matadors travel to Stockton, Calif., to face the Pacific Tigers in a three-game series with a doubleheader on Mar. 31 and a single game on April 1. Both days are slated to begin at noon.
