Matadors Fall 1-0 to Maine in Finale of Northridge Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (5-19) lost 1-0 to Maine Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2012 Northridge Classic at Matador Diamond. CSUN got strong pitching from Crystal Maas and timely defense, but the Matador offense managed just two hits and one walk off Black Bear starting pitcher Beth Spoehr.

Maas (0-5) allowed five hits and one earned run in five innings of work. The game's only run came on a two-out triple in the fifth that squirmed down the left field line. Maas also set a season high with four strikeouts.

Brianna Elder tossed the last two innings for the Matadors. She gave up two strikeouts and had two strikeouts. Through 12.1 innings of work this season, Elder, a redshirt freshman, has a 0.57 ERA.

At the plate, Spoeher frustrated the Matadors into routine outs all day. CSUN did not strikeout, but only Samantha Sloniker and Mikayla Thielges had a hit. Jaci Carlsen drew a walk, but was subsequently caught stealing.

CSUN returns to action with a three-game homestand against No. 23 New Mexico next weekend. The Matadors and Lobos will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 17 and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 18. Both days will begin at 1 p.m. and will be held at Matador Diamond.
