Matadors Defeat Iowa 1-0 in Eight Innings

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (1-12) defeated Iowa 1-0 in eight innings Saturday evening at the Cathedral City Classic. In extra innings, Samantha Sloniker executed a sac bunt and Madeline Sale delivered a Sac Fly to propel the Matadors to their first win of the season.

None of the extra inning heroics would have been possible without the performance of Mia Pagano in the pitching circle. The junior went all eight innings and allowed on five hits to th Hawkeyes. She had six strikeouts during the game and allowed just one extra-base hit.

The Matadors had five hits themselves, led by two hits from Sale who batted lead off against the Hawkeyes. Jaci Carlsen had a double for Northridge and continued to ascend the school career top 10 in the category.

Slonniker had a single and two sacrifice bunts and Carlsen also had a sac bunt. Mikayla Thielges had the fifth CSUN hit and Leann Lopez scored the game's only run.

The Matadors close out their time in Cathedral City with a pair of games on Sunday, Feb. 26. Northridge will face No. 1 California (1 p.m.) and San Diego State (3 p.m.). Next weekend, CSUN heads to San Diego where it will face another five-game tournament slate.
