Matadors Put Together Solid Final Round, Finish Seventh at Big West Championship

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - After a disappointing second round on Monday, the Cal State Northridge women's golf team put together its best round of the tournament on Tuesday to finish seventh at the conclusion of the 2013 Big West Championships at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Matadors posted a team round of 312, the fifth-lowest round of the day and moved up one spot from where they began the day. CSUN wound up the tournament with rounds of 318-324-312 to finish at 954, three shots better than Hawai'i (957).

The three teams that finished just ahead of the Matadors, UC Riverside (940), Cal State Fullerton (949) and Cal Poly (950), were separated by just 10 shots as CSUN was just five strokes out of a top-five finish.

UC Davis (881) won its fourth consecutive Big West team championship as the Aggies led from start to finish on their way to a 29-stroke win. Long Beach State (910) was second and UC Irvine (922) was third in the eight-team chase.

The Matadors had two players finish in the top-20 as Clariss Guce and Margo Dionisio tied for 17th. Guce, a junior from Artesia, Calif., and Dionisio, a senior from Whittier, Calif., posted identical scores over the three rounds as each finished at (+15) 234. Each player finished with rounds of 79-78-77.

Guce was one-under through seven holes on the front nine on Tuesday but a triple bogey on the eighth hole and a bogey on number nine sent her to the back nine at three-over. She maintained that pace until a bogey on number 14 dropped her to four-over where she finished the round. Guce had a team-high three birdies in the final round.

Dionisio had two birdies to go with 10 pars in her final round 77. She was five-over after 12 holes but birdied holes 13 and 16 to get down to three-under before a bogey on number 17 and a par on 18 left her at four-over for the round. Dionisio finishes her Big West Championship career with a low finish of fourth in 2012. She also finished 30th in 2011 and 11th as a freshman in 2010.

Sophomore Elisabeth Haavardsholm had the Matadors' low round of the tournament with a three-over 76 on Tuesday. Haavardsholm led CSUN after an opening round 78 but dropped out of the top-20 following a second round 81 on Monday. Her final round 76 moved her back up into a tie for 22nd at (+16) 235. The sophomore from Oslo, Norway was consistent on Tuesday finishing with one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys.

Stephanie Bush and Sharon Shin rounded out the Matador squad as Bush finished 38th and Shin 39th. Bush (85-87-82) had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a nine-over 82 which left her at (+35) 254. Shin finished with a final round of (+12) 85 which left her 39th at (+36) 255.

Demi Runas of UC Davis won her first Big West title as she finished at one-under 218. Three Aggie golfers followed in the top-four as Andrea Wong (220) was second, Bev Vatananugulkit (223) was third and Amy Simanton (224) was fourth.
