Clariss Guce Claims Red Rocks Invitational as CSUN Finishes Second

SEDONA, Ariz. - Junior Clariss Guce won the Red Rocks Invitational title at Oakcreek Country Club on Sunday, Cal State Northridge's second straight individual crown and the Matadors wound up second as a team.

Guce, who leads the Matadors with four top-10 finishes this season, picked up her first collegiate tournament win after Margo Dionisio posted her first in winning the Lady Cougar Invitational in San Marcos on Tuesday.

The second place team finish is CSUN's second this week after also taking runner-up honors in San Marcos. The Matadors completed a solid week of play posting their two best team finishes of the season in back-to-bacl tournaments.

Guce, who was in a four-way tie for second following Saturday's opening round 72, carded a final round two-over par 74 to edge UC Riverside's Amelia Ek and Weber State's Kelsey Chugg by one shot. Guce's two-round 146 matches her season-low for 36 holes this season. She also carded a 146 in finishing third at the Colby Classic in October.

Elisabeth Haavardsholm narrowly missed her second top-10 finish in three tournaments as she fired a final round three-over 75 to finish tied for 12th at seven-over 151. Margo Dionisio finished exactly where she began the day, finishing 26th at (+11) 155 following a final round 78.

Stephanie Bush posted a three-stroke improvement over Saturday's round as she moved into a tie for 50th at (+17) 161 after a round of seven-over 79 on Sunday. Sharon Shin, who fired a season-low round of 78 on Saturday, finished with an 87 on Sunday to slip from 33rd to 76th at (+21) 165.

As a team, the Matadors' two-round score of 609 (303-306) was second to Toledo (605) which carded a final round 301 to overtake CSUN for the team championship. Southern Utah (612) was third followed in the top-five by UC Riverside (618) and Eastern Michigan (618) in the 21-team field.

Cal State Northridge is back in action Mar. 25-26 as the Matadors travel to Bakersfield for the CSUB Invitational at Bakersfield C.C.
