Bakersfield Slips Past CSUN in Overtime
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Melissa Sweat scored the game-winning lay-up with a minute to play in overtime to lift CSU Bakersfield to a 74-73 overtime victory over the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (4-10) Thursday night at The Matadome. Cinnamon Lister led five Matadors in double figures with 20 points, including five 3-pointers, but Northridge could not capitalize on its final possession of the extra period.
Leading 46-33 five minutes into the second half, CSUN looked like it was going to start 2014 with a big victory. Instead, the Roadrunners answered with a 24-8 run to take a three-point lead (57-54) with 4:39 to play.
Lister tied things on the next possession and Bernadette Fong gave the Matadors a two-point advantage with 10 seconds left in regulation. However, Betabe Zempare tied the contest with a lay-up with less than a second left on the clock.
In the extra period, Lister hit her fifth 3-pointer of the game to give the Matadors a brief lead before Sweat's game winner.
For the contest, Lister was 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from 3-point range. She has scored 20+ points five times and is averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game for the season.
Fong came off the bench to finish with 11 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes of action. It was her third game in double-figures this season. Camille Mahlknecht also came off the bench and posted 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Junior Ashlee Guay had three steals in 43 minutes Thursday to move within two of setting a new school record at 214. She finished with 15 points, four assists and a season-high eight rebounds and seven free throws.
Janae Sharpe was the fifth Matador to score in double-figures, finishing with 12 points. She also had five rebounds and seven assists in the contest.
As a team, CSUN shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) for the game. However, CSUB held a 46-37 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive boards. The Roadrunners finished with 40 points in the paint and 20 that came as a result of a second chance.
The Matadors led 37-30 at halftime and scored the final seven points of the frame. Tyonna Outland scored 22 and Sweat finished with a game-high 23 to pace Bakersfield.
Northridge now starts its Big West Conference schedule with a pair of road games. On Jan. 9, the Matadors face UC Davis at 7 p.m. Three days later, CSUN heads to Honolulu to square off with the Rainbow Wahine at 8 p.m. (PT) // 5 p.m. (HT)
