CSUN Women's Basketball Hosts The Master's College in Exhibition

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team takes on The Master's College in an exhibition contest at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 in The Matadome. Fresh off being made the preseason favorite in the Big West Conference, the Matadors embark on the 2012-13 season with a home exhibition contest against the Mustangs.

Northridge returns eight letterwinners and four starters from last season's squad that finished 17-14 overall and participated in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).  Despite their losses, the Matadors return over 60 percent of their points and rebounds from last season.

The team welcomes four incoming freshmen expected to make an immediate impact on the program: Breeyon Alexander, Bernadette Fong, Jasmine Johnson and Marta Masoni.  Northridge also added Cinnamon Lister, a junior transfer from Boise State, who will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The Master's College finished 12-19 overall last season and 5-13 in the GSAC. The team returns three starters, seven letterwinners and adds seven newcomers to the roster.

CSUN was made the league favorite by a media poll and sophomores Janae Sharpe and Ashlee Guay were named to the Preseason All-Big West Team.

Sharpe was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year last season after averaging 11.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. She led Northridge with 145 free throw attempts and added 55 steals during the course of the season to earn All-Big West Second Team honors.

Guay had more assists (129) and steals (91) than any other player in the Big West Conference last season. She added 8.6 points per game to earn All-Big West Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team honors.

Up front, the Matadors feature several returning players looking to assume a greater role this season. Senior Violet Alama was the 2011-12 Big West Co-Sixth Woman of the Year and carries career averages of 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds into the year.

Sophomore Camille Mahlknecht returns after making 20 starts and averaging 5.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. She also had 45 blocked shots and was named a team captain. Another CSUN senior, Jianni Jackson, averaged 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds last year while the team's third senior Felicia Walker is another team captain looking to close our her CSUN career strong.

The Matadors open the 2012-13 regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 with a home game against the University of Portland Pilots at 5 p.m. The game is part of a CSUN basketball doubleheader in which the men's program will then take on Pepperdine at 7:30 p.m. A separate ticket is required for both contests.
