John Baker Earns MPSF Molten Player of the Week Honors
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After a record-setting week, Cal State Northridge senior opposite John Baker was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Molten Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Baker paced the then 10th-ranked Matadors to a pair of upset wins last week as CSUN defeated No. 8 USC in four sets before topping fifth-ranked Pepperdine in five.
Baker, a senior who hails from Racine, Wis., established a career-high with 22 kills against the Trojans then came back with another career-best with 24 in the the upset of the Waves. He committed just three hitting errors against USC to hit a match-high .543 and also matched his career-high by serving three of the Matadors' six aces. Baker then took a career-best 52 swings against Pepperdine, hitting .327 while adding two of the Matadors' three aces and four blocks. For the week, Baker averaged 5.11 kills and 6.00 points per set while hitting .414 in 87 attacks.
"It's always nice to be recognized for your play but this doesn't show how much of a team effort it takes to get there," said Baker. "Our passers have been outstanding these past few matches, which makes it easier for Travis to move the ball around. Travis is a great setter and mixing that with our huge middles pulling blockers so only one is blocking me really helps. These guys all gave me perfect opportunities to put the ball away. We have an extremely unselfish team which makes for some really fun volleyball and I'm really looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store for us."
The honor was the first by a Matador player since Julius Hoefer earned the award on Mar. 26, 2012. Cal State Northridge has now received the weekly honor 18 times over the last 10 seasons.
"John clearly had his best week of the season," said Matador head coach Jeff Campbell. "Because of the number of kills he had and his hitting percentage he was really able to carry our team to wins over USC and Pepperdine. I'm very proud of him and the way he played with a lot of heart, he left everything out on the court and that's a big reason we were able to beat two outstanding volleyball teams."
