CSUN Concludes Road Meets at Arizona and Cal State Los Angeles
The Cal State Northridge men's and women's track & field teams split up this weekend with the multi-event athletes heading to the Jim Click Shootout in Arizona and a good portion of the squad competing at Cal State LA.
The Matadors' Derrick Harris led three men into the decathlon competition in Tucson and he finished 13th with 6,195 points. Harris opened the competition in good shape running the fastest time in the 100 meters at 10.99 which is a season-best by one-tenth of a second. He also matched his season-best (17.17) in the 110 meter hurdles, had a big PR in the discus throwing 117-10 (35.92) and went above his season-best in the pole vault after clearing 14-5.25 (4.40).
Taylor Cudequest and Kevin Finley also competed for CSUN with Cudequest placing 15th with 5,879 points while Finley was unable to finish the competition after finishing three events. Cudequest posted season-bests in seven of the 10 events, the 100 meters (11.63), shot put (10.97), 400 meters (52.06), 110 hurdles (17.09), discus (109-2), pole vault (11-9.75) and javelin (128-0).
Three Matador women also competed in the heptathlon with Stephanie Hicks finishing 15th with 3,853 points and Niah Simmons finishing 16th with 3,155 points. Jordan DuFault did not finish the heptathlon after three events.
Hicks had one season-best, running 26.15 in the 200 meters which was .54 faster than her previous best this season. Simmons best scoring event of the day was the 100 meter hurdles where she ran 15.64 to earn 759 points.
At Cal State LA's Invitational, Tiana Webberley continued her impressive season as she finished first in the pole vault after matching her season-best height of 12-7.50 (3.85). Samantha Sinclair posted season-bests in both the shot put (39-5.25) and the hammer (126-0). The Matador women competed for the first time this season in the 10,000 meters. Yvonne Castillo-Urbina finished in 37:38.25 followed by Araceli Zainos (39:19.65) and Alexis Pichardo (40:05.63).
On the men's side, several Matadors posted season-bests including Grant Weiss in the 110 hurdles (15.56), Marcelo Rosales in the 1,500 meters (4:20.15) and Martin Santillan in the 3,000 meters (9:34.92). In the field events, Gavin Fallen notched a CSUN season-best in the javelin tossing a mark of 159-0 (48.46).
