Matadors Announce 2013 Track & Field Schedule

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge and second-year head coach Avery Anderson have finalized the 2013 indoor and outdoor season schedule. The Matador men and women will compete a host of indoor meets before the outdoor season gets underway March 14.

"Our 2013 schedule takes into account all areas of the team," said Anderson. "We want to continue to develop our distance program but also build on the traditional strength of the team which as been the sprints, jumps, throws and multi-events. I think this indoor and outdoor schedule does that."

CSUN gets the indoor season underway Jan. 18 at the Albany Great Dane Classic in New York. That meet coincides with the NYU Team Challenge the following day. The Matadors will also visit Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Multi-Event meet (Jan. 25) and College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational on Feb. 9 prior to the MPSF Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23.

As usual, the CSUN track & field program will host several All-Comers Meets which fall mainly during the indoor season. The Matadors welcome the community and other interested competitors to the CSUN Track Complex for meets on Jan. 5, Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 2, Feb. 16 and Mar. 2.

There will be one final indoor meet, the NCAA Last Chance Qualifier on Mar. 2 as competitors seek to gain entry into the NCAA Indoor Championships which will be held Mar. 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.

The outdoor season commences on Mar. 14 as the Matadors host their annual Northridge Invitational over the course of three days. The multi-event portion of the meet gets underway Thursday, Mar. 14 and will run through Friday, Mar. 15. The main meet will begin Friday with most events taking place Saturday, Mar. 16.

The next three weeks of the season will take the Matador men and women to a host of new meets beginning Mar. 22-23 at the Pasadena Games. The meet will feature a distance carnival on Mar. 22. CSUN will then send its multi-event athletes to the Cal meet in Berkeley on Mar. 27-28 and the Matadors will remain in the Bay Area for meets at Stanford (Mar. 29-30) and San Francisco State (Mar. 29).

A stretch of meets at Pac-12 schools follows as Northridge travels to Tucson, Ariz. for the Jim Click Multi-Events (Apr. 5-6) prior to the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA on Apr. 12-13. CSUN is also scheduled to send some athletes to the Texas Invitational on Apr. 13 in Austin, Texas.

"We want to raise the level of meets we are competing at this year," added Anderson. "The multi-event meets at Cal and Arizona will be good tests for our heptathletes and decathletes."

The Mt. SAC Invitational signals the homestretch of the outdoor campaign as the Matadors look to improve their season-best times/marks at the annual meet in Walnut on Apr. 19-20. CSUN will then host the first-ever Black & Red Invitational at the Matador Track Complex on Apr. 27 prior to the Big West Multi-Events getting underway the following weekend (May 3-4) also at CSUN.

For the first time since 2010, the Matadors will play host to the conference championships on May 10-11. After finishing third on the men's side and fourth on the women's side in 2012, the Matadors look to recapture the Big West track & field crown which they have won six times (four women, two men) on their home track.

Following the Big West Championships, the Matadors will turn their attention to the NCAA Western Regional Championships in Austin, Texas (May 23-25) which leads into the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. (June 5-8).
