NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Ahead of this weekend's adidas MLS Player Combine in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Cal State Northridge men's soccer defender Joe Franco was named to the MVPs Second Team, Soccer America announced Monday. The honor comes just four days before the start of the Combine, which showcases senior soccer stars from around the country in anticipation of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
Soccer America MVPs are broken down into two teams and honor the players who have had the biggest impact on their team's success, regardless of position. The inaugural MVPs were announced in 1976.
For Franco, the award comes on the heels of one of the most storied careers in Cal State Northridge history. In 2012, Franco was named to the All-Big West Conference First Team, the NSCAA All-Far West Region Second Team and the Scholar All-America Second Team. He was also named the Big West Conference Defender of the Year after captaining the Matadors to a 15-7 record and the program's first conference championship since 2005.
