Chris Russo Selected as an Individual for NCAA Championships Greensboro Regional
Cal State Northridge junior Chris Russo has been selected as an individual to compete in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships for the first time. Russo was one of five individuals selected to compete in the Greensboro Regional to be held at Grandover Resort's East Course in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 17-19.
Russo, who finished ninth at the 2012 Big West Championship, is one of five individuals selected to the field and will compete with teams from Auburn, UNLV, Florida, Duke, Indiana, Liberty, SMU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette and Charlotte as well individual players from Campbell, Stetson, Samford and Sacred Heart.
"Chris had a great year so he's very deserving of his spot in the Regional," said head coach Jim Bracken. "Not knowing what the golf course is like, I'm not setting any expectations for Chris but he won twice this season so he's got as good a chance as anyone."
The junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., will be making his first appearance in the NCAA Championship Regionals. He finished the 2012 season with a team-leading stroke average of 72.51 which ranks fifth in Matador history for a single season. He had Northridge's two individual wins this season claiming the St. Mary's Invitational in September and the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in February. He was the Matadors' low scorer in 10 of 12 tournaments this season and finished with a team-best seven top-20 finishes.
Russo is the second Matador player to advance to the NCAA Championships since Cal State Northridge moved up to the Division I level in 1991. Nick Delio qualified as an individual three times from 2009-2011 and claimed individual medalist honors at the 2010 NCAA Southwest Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships. The Matadors last had a Division II champion in 1990 when Bob Burns won the national championship.
