Matadors Wind Up 22nd at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Cal State Northridge posted its lowest 54-hole total of the season but it couldn't prevent the Matadors from finishing 22nd our of 23 teams at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick G.C.

Northirdge's previous low tournament score came at the Firestone Grill Invitational in October where the Matadors posted a 54-hole total of 892. Northridge bettered that by 12 shots this week on the par-70 course with team rounds of 290-295-295 for a team score of 880. However the rest of the field also excelled as eight teams finished under par led by Kansas State's winning total of 15-under 826. Colorado (828) finished second followed by San Diego (829), Texas Tech (833) and Colorado State (834).

"This was an easy golf course and we should have played better," said head coach Jim Bracken. "It was frustrating that we couldn't even get one guy to shoot under par. We've played a lot of golf in the past week but it simply came down to execution and we didn't execute."

The Matadors finished nine shots out of the top-20 and were led by Chris Russo for the eighth time in 10 tournaments this season. However no Matador player was able to crack the top-80.

Russo posted a final round four-over 74 to finish tied for 80th at eight-over 218. Jason Rosenkranz and Shane Blanchard both tied for 89th at 10-over 220 after Rosenkranz carded a final round 75 while Blanchard posted a 73.

Steven Molumby finished tied for 101st at (+13) 223 after also posting a final round 73 while Ryan Green rounded out the Matador scoring as he tied for 117th at (+18) 228 following a final round 78.

"We've got one more tournament at Irvine in two weeks so we'll regroup and play better there," said Bracken. "We're a better team than we're showing right now so hopefully it will be a good tuneup for the Big West Championship at the end of the month."
