Solid Final Round Moves Matadors into Seventh at OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Chris Russo finished 11th and the Cal State Northridge men's golf team posted a final round 295 to move into a seventh-place finish on the final day of the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invitational Tuesday at Sandpiper G.C.

The Matadors, who sat 13th after an opening round 308, consistently moved up the leaderboard over the final two rounds. Northridge jumped up to ninth after firing a second round 292 and followed up with a 295 on Tuesday to finish seventh in the 13-team field.

"After the first round, I just wanted to see improvement," said head coach Jim Bracken. "I know we're a better team than we showed in that first round and we played better the rest of the tournament."

Long Beach State took home the team title after carding a team score of 854 which was eight strokes better than second-place Saint Mary's (863). The host Gauchos (876) were third followed by Sacramento State (884), Loyola Marymount (884) and Southern Utah (885) finished just ahead of the Matadors (895) who had three players among the top-25.

Russo, who was tied for 15th-place after two rounds on Monday, finished with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to move into 11th-place at two-over 218. The top-20 finish is Russo's fifth in eight tournaments this season as the junior from Thousand Oaks finished with rounds of 72-74-72.

Sophomore Ryan Green narrowly missed his first top-20 finish this season and second of his Matador career as he finished tied for 21st at six-over 222 following a final round (+3) 75. Green posted a second round 69, his lowest round as a Matador, to put himself in contention for a top-20 finish but wound up 21st with scores of 78-69-75.

After an opening round 80, senior Jason Rosenkranz also made a run at the top-20 with a second round 72 and a final round 71. Rosenkranz wound up finishing tied for 25th at seven-over 223 which matched his low 54-hole total this season.

Also for the Matadors, Shane Blanchard finished 60th at (+18) 234 following rounds of 78-79-77, Steven Molumby was 65th at (+28) 244 after rounds of 84-77-83 and Jared LeGrand, competing as an individual, placed 68th at (+36) 252 after posting scores of 81-89-82.

"I'm hoping to build off the final two rounds we played here this weekend at Arizona State," added Bracken. "We just need to be more consistent, play a little smarter and we'll be fine."
