IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State Northirdge junior Chris Russo earned the Big West Conference's first Golfer of the Month award of the 2011-12 season.
Russo, who joined UC Davis' Demi Runas on the women's side, earned the conference's top player for September after winning his first collegiate tournament. At the St. Mary's Invitational, held at both the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses in Seaside, Calif., Russo carded three straight sub-par rounds (68-69-70) to win by two shots.
Russo's three-round score of nine under-par 207 is a career low for the Thousand Oaks native and is the fourth top-10 finish of his Matador career. Russo's best finish prior to the St. Mary's Invitational was a fifth-place showing at the 2010 Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate.
"Chris had a great tournament at St. Mary's so this is a well-deserved honor," said head coach Jim Bracken. "It's his first conference Golfer of the Month honor and I suspect it won't be the last of his Matador career."
Russo's award is the first for a Northridge golfer in 2011-12 and the first since Nick Delio collected the second of his two Big West Golfer of the Month last April.
Russo and the Matadors tee it up again Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 2-3) at Cal Poly's Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes G.C. in Nipomo, Calif.
