Matadors Ink Seven Recruits to 2012 Early Signing Class
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
The Cal State Northridge baseball program has signed seven players to national letters of intent for the 2012 early signing period, head coach Matt Curtis announced today. The recruiting class consists of four high school players and three junior college transfers.
"We are extremely proud of our second early signing class here at Cal State Northridge," said Curtis. "We felt it was important to continue to build the program with talented high school seniors, while supplementing some immediate needs with impact junior college prospects. "
The Matadors have signed a range of athletes to compliment the existing group of players at each position. In all, the class is made up of one outfielder, two infielders, three pitchers, and one two-way player.

Michael Coates (Moorpark College) – Right-handed pitcher for Head Coach Mario Porto - Coates led the Raiders last season in ERA at 2.92, and was second in strikeouts … Was named to the All-Western State Conference Second Team last year and selected to the CCCBCA All Star Game this Fall. Prepped at Thousand Oaks High School.
"Michael has a clean delivery and solid pitcher's frame. He can throw four pitches for strikes, which should allow him to be a starter at the Division I level. His experience should put him in position to contribute to our staff right away."
Will Colontano (San Pasqual HS) – 6'2", 175 lbs., Left-handed hitting infielder for Head Coach Tony Colontano – All-League Avocado East during sophomore and junior year… Starting shortstop freshman, sophomore and junior year… Helped lead team to an Avocado East League Championship junior year… Hit over .330 his freshman, sophomore and junior years… Named baseball athlete of the week by North County Times as a freshman … Earned Mr. Baseball Award junior year … Played 3 years on Tampa Bay Rays Scout Team.
"Will is a strong, left-handed, middle of the order type bat. He is versatile in the infield with soft hands and strong arm."
Anthony Cortez (Downey HS) – Right-handed pitcher for Head Coach Jess Gonzalez. Selected to the CBCA High School Coaches Showcase (Summer 2011).
"Anthony has an easy delivery that should develop increased velocity as he grows into his frame. He has a plus slider and is very athletic, also playing middle infield for his high school team."
Kyle Ferramola (Cypress College/University of Washington) – 6'1", 215 lbs., Right-handed pitcher for Head Coach Scott Pickler - as a high school senior, posted a 3.63 earned run average at Los Alamitos High School … Notched a 1.52 ERA in 27.2 innings as a junior … Played in the Orange County Senior Showcase, on the Atlanta Braves scout team for two years, and in the Professional Baseball Scouts of Southern California All-Star Game senior year … U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete Award recipient … Redshirted at the University of Washington in 2011 … Played for the New Market Rebels of the Valley Baseball League for Summer 2011 … Majoring in Civil Engineering.
"Kyle is a hard thrower with a plus breaking ball. He really opened eyes this fall and has the stuff to be an impact starter or throw at the back end of games for us."
Shane Fraijo (Citrus College) – 6'0", 180 lbs., Right-handed hitting infielder for Head Coach Steve Gomez – Helped Citrus College win a conference championship last season … Named to the All-Conference Team and the All-Southern California First Team … Three-year varsity letter winner at Northview High School … Was named to the All-League First Team during junior and senior seasons as his team won the league title both years … As a junior, helped team to CIF Div. 4 title and was named All-CIF … Offensive Player of the Year and a Scholar Athlete award winner as a senior.

Dominique Lemus (San Pasqual HS) – 6'1", 200 lbs., Right-handed pitcher/outfielder for Head Coach Tony Colontano - Earned All-Avocado East League First Team and team MVP honors junior year while leading team to league title and CIF semifinal appearance … Was a two-year member of the Tampa Bay Rays Scout team … Upon completion of high school, will have earned five letters as a four-year varsity baseball starter (pitcher/catcher) and one year varsity football player (defensive end).
"Dominique is a physical and versatile athlete with the potential to be a power arm and bat. He has pitched, caught, and played the outfield and will get the opportunity to contribute as a two-way player."
Anthony Lombardo (Mira Costa HS) – 6'2", 190 lbs., Left-handed hitting outfielder for Head Coach Cassidy Olson - Helped Mustangs win league title and reach the CIF Southern Section Semifinals in 2010 … Named the teams Rookie of the Year in 2010 … Competed for the So Cal Cubs Scout Team and Playa Vista Orioles Summer and Connie Mack Teams … Combined varsity stats for sophomore and junior years: batted .330 with 5 HR, 11triples, 35 RBI's, scored 37 runs and .524 slg%.
"Anthony has the strength and bat speed that demonstrate power potential down the road. He is also a good runner who will steal some bases and has the speed and arm strength to play all three outfield spots."
