GAME 2 RESUMPTION
After being forced to halt due to darkness after 15 innings on Saturday, CSUN and UC Riverside resumed game two of the series in the top of the 16th inning with the score tied at two. The Matadors sent nine batters to the plate in the 16th to score four runs and defeated the Highlanders 6-5.
Raegan Jackson walked to begin the 16th. Gizella Vargas Sandoval took a 1-0 pitch over the left field scoreboard for a two-run home run to give the Matadors the lead. With one out, Sydney Freijanes reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by UCR shortstop Kat Montuya. Vinessa Nunez walked. Brooke Perez, who started the game and reentered in the 15th, was relieved by Emma Fallen. Fallen's first batter was Shaylan Whatman, who walked to load the bases. Alexa Landeros grounded out 1-6-3, which allowed Freijanes to score. Mikayla Carman's infield single scored Nunez for a four-run advantage. Kylie Galindo lined out to deep center to end the inning.
Gigi Araki doubled down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the 16th. Rebecca Cabezas singled up the middle to give the Highlanders runners on the corners. Taylor Burdette singled to left to drive in Ariaki. Lauren Garewal singled down the left field line to score Cabezas to make it 6-4. Lauryn Carranco relieved Allie Gardiner. Her first batter was Nadia Witt, who walked to load the bases. Marissa Burk singled to right to drive in the fifth run, and Jackson came up throwing. Galindo grabbed the throw and made a swipe tag to get Garewal at home for the second out. Montuya flew out to left.
Gardiner pitched 6.2 innings of relief to improve to 5-2 on the year. Carranco earned her second save of the season, getting the game's final two outs. Vargas-Sandoval's home run was the first for the freshman. She was 2-for-6. Carman went 3-for-7 with an RBI to lead the Matadors. Bella Mejia, Freijanes, and Nunez all charted two hits. Araki and Cabezas each recorded three hits to lead the Highlanders.
The Big West record for the longest game is 20 innings, set on Apr. 20, 1991, when Hawai'i defeated Utah State 2-1. CSUN's school record for the longest game in 17 innings had occurred on two occasions, most recently on Apr. 21, 2001, when CSUN lost 1-0 to Long Beach State.
GAME 3
CSUN's second-inning run proved enough as the Matadors defeated the Highlanders 1-0 in the nightcap.
Freijanes' two-out single in the top of the second scored Vargas Sandoval. Nunez followed with a single that chased UC Riverside starter Alexis Galvan in favor of Briza Blanco. With the count 2-2, Whatman grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the final out.
Isabella Alonso retired the first six Highlanders she faced before Araki led off the third with a single to center. Cabezes' sacrifice bunt advanced Araki into scoring position at second. Nunez dove to her backhand to make a catch of a Burdette foul ball for the second cath. Garewal popped out to short for the final out.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Montuya tripled down the right field line. Carranco came on a relief and got Brito to foul out to left to wrap up the frame.
Alday opened the fifth with a bloop single to right. Alday reached second on a Carranco wild pitch. Down in the count, 3-1, Carranco induced a Burdette ground out to third to end the inning.
Carman led off the sixth with an opposite-field single to right. Cabezas went to her backhand to nab a Galindo liner down the third base line for the first out. Vargas Sandoval lined out to Cabezas before Jackson popped out to short for the final out.
Montuya reached on an error to begin the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on the play. Brito couldn't hold up her swing on a 2-2 Carranco breaking ball and struck out. Alday flew out to left, but Montuya couldn't advance on the play. Araki walked to put the go-ahead run at first. Down 1-2 in the count, Cabezas fouled off three consecutive Carranco pitches before evening the count at 2-2. Cabezas hit a grounder to Vargas Sandoval at first for the final out.
Alonso and Carranco combined on a three-hitter, with Carranco getting her fourth win of the season as she threw 3.1 innings. The three UCR pitches allowed six hits. Maddie Heinilin, who came on with two outs in the top of the fourth, gave up one hit over the final four. She pitched in every game of the series and did not give up a run in 15 innings, allowing six hits and recording 11 ks. UC Riverside is 17-26, 4-14 in league play.
