CSUN Completes Sweep of Saint Mary's, Reaches 30 Wins
5/20/2022 5:37:00 PM | Baseball
MORAGA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (30-21) completed a three-game sweep of Saint Mary's (25-30) by taking both ends of a Friday doubleheader at Louis Guisto Field. The Matadors took the opener 5-1 in a scheduled seven-inning game where Lucas Braun went the distance, striking out seven batters. CSUN won game two 7-3, scoring four runs in the ninth inning. With the sweep, CSUN has reached 30 wins in a season for the first time since 2016.
Â
GAME 1 RECAP
Braun would give up two hits to the Gaels to start the first inning, but he would be in control for nearly the rest of the way on the mound.
Â
In the first, Braun benefited from a throwout at second base from catcher CJ Yogi to keep Saint Mary's off the scoreboard. Following the two singles to start the game, Braun retired 14 consecutive Saint Mary's batters and picked up four strikeouts along the way.
Â
CSUN collected three hits over the first two innings, but would not break through until the third. In that frame, Andrew Sojka doubled and later scored on a one-out RBI single from Kai Moody. Joey Kramer added to the lead with a timely two-out double that plated two more runs.
Â
Gonzalez opened up the fifth with a solo home run to give CSUN a four-run lead. The Matadors picked up two more singles in the frame and eventually notched another run on a play where Mason Le was picked off in-between first and second base, but Bart West scored behind him from third.
Â
Braun took a five-run lead to the sixth where the Gaels finally broke through in the scoring column. A pair of two-out singles including a hit from Chris Santiago cut the CSUN lead to 5-1.
Â
Braun though would bounce back by retiring the final four batters of the game. In perhaps his best inning of the day, Braun struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh for the complete game.
Â
GAME 2 RECAP
The finale of the series would be a tight game for eight innings until the Matadors broke the game open late.
CSUN scratched across its first run in the third inning on a sacrifce fly from West with the bases loaded. The Matadors would increase their lead to 2-0 in the sixth, taking advantage of two Saint Mary's errors that resulted in Le scoring.
The Matador pitching staff held the Gaels at bay throughout most of the game while managing a slim lead. CSUN starter Diego Gutierrez worked five solid innings, holding the Gaels to three hits.
Gutierrez saw his most taxing inning in the first when Saint Mary's had two hits, but a key throwout by Sebastian Garcia on an attempted steal of second base by Gavin Napier stopped the rally. After the rocky start, Gutierrez found his footing and went on to limit the Gaels to one hit over the next four frames. In the fourth, CSUN's defense again picked up Gutierrez when Moody threw out Santiago attempting to stretch a single to a double.
Blake Sodersten pitched a scorless sixth on the mound before giving up a solo home run to Blake McDonald to start the seventh. Sodersten would have to strand two runners in a shutout eighth to keep the lead intact.
CSUN collected an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Camarillo before finally breaking through with a huge ninth inning. Nine hitters batted in the ninth, which was highlighted by a two-run pinch-hit double from Gonzalez. Sojka collected an RBI single after two CSUN walks then Camarillo made it a 7-1 game on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the ninth, Saint Mary's began to chip away at the lead when three-straight hits, capped by a Dalton Mashore double brought in a run. Blake Schriever though came in out of the bullpen to finally stop the uprising. After a sacrifice fly from Kyle Velazquez, Schriever retired two of the next three batters to secure the victory.
GAME NOTES
The Matadors finished with 44 hits in the three-game series including 24 in the doubleheader. CSUN also posted no errors in the three games while its catchers threw out three runners.
Braun notched his first career complete game and improved to 6-1 as a starter. Both Bohning and Camarillo extended their on-base streaks to 11.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"After coming off a tough weekend on the field and the travel home from Hawai'i plus the fact that our guys are in finals week, I was concerned about this weekend. Yet again, our guys showed resiliency and ended up sweeping Saint Mary's on the road. It was a complete team effort. We put up some great numbers offensively and had some great execution to help lead us to a road sweep. Plus the starts from Lucas Braun in game one and Diego Gutierrez giving us five solid in game two only to be picked up by Blake Sodersten and Blake Schriever, but for me, the story of the whole weekend was about the pitching and defense and the play of our catchers CJ Yogi and Sebastian Garcia.
"What makes me the proudest is that this coaching staff, and more importantly the players are turning this into a pitching and defensive program. I know from my past that this is what wins championships. So as we get ready to prepare for our last weekend, I feel there are a lot of positives as this program moves forward. Now, along with getting our 30th win on the season, our quest is to finish as high as we can in the Big West standings."
