Matadors Slug Their Way to Series-Opening Win Over Saint Mary's
5/19/2022 6:21:00 PM | Baseball
The Matadors were held hitless through the first three innings on Thursday but flipped the script beginning in the fourth inning.
In a frame where 12 Matadors stepped to the plate, CSUN scored the first of two seven-run innings in the top of the fourth. Kevin Fitzer picked up the first Matador hit of the game with a single that put runners at the corners with nobody out. Moments later, West drove in two runs with a double to center field before Mason Le collected an RBI ground-rule double for a 3-0 lead. CSUN though was far from done in the inning as the Matadors forced two pitching changes in the frame. Bohning came through with a two-run single and Moody followed with an RBI single of his own. With the bases loaded, Fitzer nearly hit a grand slam but settled for a sacrifice fly to put the Matadors ahead 7-0.Â
CSUN would hit double digits in the scoring column in the top of the fifth. The first two batters reached in the frame, setting the table for Bohning to drive in two more runs with a single. Two batters later, Ali Camarillo joined the hit parade with an RBI single. CSUN collected its 11th run of the afternoon when Camarillo scored on a throwing error via a Moody single.
On the flip side, Traxel gave the Matadors another quality start. The right-hander retired seven in a row after giving up a single to start the game. The Gaels were thwarted from scoring a run in the third inning when Marc Goulart was thrown out at home by first baseman Joey Kramer on a fielder's choice.
The only blemishes against Traxel came in the fourth and sixth innings when the Gaels put up single tallies. The Matadors though provided Traxel with solid defense throughout to help keep the Gaels' offense at bay. In the fifth, catcher CJ Yogi threw out Dalton Mashore attempting to steal second base while the Matador defense turned a 6-4-3 double play in the sixth to help squash a rally. Traxel went on to retire the final seven batters he faced in the game.
Twelve more hitters batted in a seven-run eighth inning that extended the lead further. The first six batters reached to start the inning as West and Nathan Barraza opened the inning with singles before Le deposited an opposite field home run. After loading the bases with one out, Moody picked up another RBI single. Gabe Gonzalez came off the bench and delivered a two-run single to left. West would cap the scoring barrage with a run-scoring double making it a 19-2 game.
Chad Wilson relieved Traxel in the top of the ninth and pitched a scoreless frame to seal the win.

GAME NOTES
Every member of the CSUN starting lineup scored at least one run while 11 total players touched home plate in the game. A total of 10 Matadors recorded a hit and eighth drove in at least one run. The team's 20 hits on the day were the most since the Matadors collected 25 hits against Manhattan on Feb. 24, 2018. CSUN's 19 runs are the most its scored since April 6, 2019 against UC Riverside (25 runs).
Traxel moved up to eighth place on the CSUN career strikeout list, passing Fili Martinez (1986-89) and Erasmo Ramirez (1995-97). A career 15-game winner with the Matadors, Traxel has struck out 208 batters over his four seasons at CSUN.
The win for CSUN secured the program's third-straight winning season under head coach Dave Serrano.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today started slow for us offensively and I'm proud of the adjustments the offense made to have a great day. Many guys contributed but Kai Moody, Bart West and Brandon Bohning had huge days to help lead the way. I was proud of the execution by Kevin Fitzer and CJ Yogi. Then from the mound, we got another good outing from Blaine Traxel. In a tough game to keep your focus with long innings on offense, he just kept doing what he does. Now, we see how much we learned from last weekend when the opener was pretty easy and we didn't play well after that. This team has done many things right and are building the foundation for the future success of this program. So I have no doubt that they will finish this season off the right way."
