Matadors Rally but Fall Short to UCSB, 9-7
4/9/2022 5:29:00 PM | Baseball
Â
Blake Sodersten got off to a solid start in the opening inning, retiring the side in order but the Gauchos broke through over the next two frames for seven runs.
Â
In the second, John Newman Jr. singled home the game's first run before Jordan Sprinkle belted a two-run homer. The Gauchos added to their lead with a four-run inning in the third. After loading the bases with nobody out, Nick Vogt stroked a two-run double. UCSB added another run on a dropped fly ball in right then Jason Willow singled in another run.
CSUN though showed little quit despite a 7-0 deficit. The Matadors began chipping away at the lead in the third inning when Mason Le grounded in a run. An inning later, Andrew Sojka blasted a leadoff home run to bring CSUN a run closer. UCSB extended its lead to 8-2 in the top of the fifth but the Matadors answered back with a single tally of their own in the sixth courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Bart West.
The Matadors put together a two-out rally in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a walk and two hit batters. With the bases loaded, Kai Moody battled to a 3-2 count before hitting a single over the head of a leaping Jason Willow at second base and into left field for a two-run single. Gabe Gonzalez stepped to the plate next representing the tying run but Ryan Harvey struck him out, keeping the score at 8-5.
While the Matadors were cutting into the Gaucho lead, Gutierrez gave CSUN much needed strong pitching on the mound. Entering the game in the third, Gutierrez stranded the bases loaded in that inning before eventually finishing with six innings of relief. During his stint on the mound, Gutierrez allowed two hits and two walks while racking up six strikeouts.
Â
CSUN would inch closer in the bottom of the eighth beginning with an RBI double from Joey Kramer that plated West. Brandon Bohning followed with an infield RBI single to score Kramer who earlier reached third on a passed ball. However, double plays hurt the Matadors throughout the game as the Gauchos picked up their fourth twin killing of the game in the eighth when Mason Le struck out and Bohning was caught stealing.
Off the scoreboard since the fifth inning, the Gauchos picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Kyle Johnson collected a key RBI double that just went fair down the left-field line to score Christian Kirtley.
Brady Huddleston, who worked out of the jam in the bottom of the eighth, would retire the Matadors in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure a save.

GAME NOTES
Moody finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for his 11th multiple-hit game of the season. West and Kramer also had two hits with an RBI apiece. Jakob Simons and Sojka extended their on-base streaks to 11 consecutive games.
Gutierrez's six innings pitched set a career-high for the freshman while his six strikeouts also tied his personal best this season. Xavier Martinez recorded the final two outs in the ninth inning, allowing one hit.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Very tough to fall behind and disappointing more than tough. A valiant effort by our team and I said that to them. I'm not wrong about the character and makeup of this group, there's no quit. That could have been very easily, after yesterday's loss, to say this isn't our day. We had the tying run at the plate a couple of times. That's the silver lining. I just talked to the team about many things that happened throughout that game, not just the seven spot they put on the board. Opportunities of the things we can control. Executing pitches, taking care of the baseball – we had three errors. First base on a pick that we work on all of the time, error in the outfield and getting an extra base on a base hit, overthrow from the outfield, a missed catch at the plate. All of those things add up to where our pain is right now and why we feel how we do in a 9-7 loss when we fought all the way back. We take care of those opportunities, make better pitches and it might be a different ballgame. We as a group, starting with me, have to get those things fixed."
