Conlan's Walk Off Clinches CSUN Series Win Over UC Davis
5/12/2018 4:47:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---RIley Conlan hit a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning to lift CSUN Baseball (23-26, 11-9 BWC) to a 2-1 victory over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Conlan finished with three hits while Justin Toerner tied a career high with four hits including a double. Isaiah Nunez received a no decision as he worked 6.2 innings allowing one run on five hits. With the victory, the Matadors notched their fifth Big West series win for the first time since 2002.Â
"The at bat before that, I got a fastball a little up and I swung as hard as I could. I was like I can't do that again or else it's not going to go well for me," said Conlan about the walk-off hit. "I knew [Connor Loar] had a good two-seam and he was working away in warmups, and he started me away. I knew I had to stay back a little longer and work the other way. Thankfully, I stuck with it and it worked out for me in the end.Â
"It's my last home series and there's a lot of emotions going through my head this weekend but there's no place I'd rather be then with this group of guys and coaching staff," added Conlan. "We're on the right track. We're fighting, we're scratching and clawing. They have a great coaching staff on the other side in UC Davis. I'm just happy that we're continuing to fight, and I'm looking forward to continuing this tomorrow and then against Fullerton next week."
After leaving a runner on base in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings, the Matadors would finally break through in the bottom of the 11th inning. Kevin Riley started the inning with a single and Nolan Bumstead followed with a sacrifice bunt, bringing Conlan to the plate. The Aggies made a move on the mound as Connor Loar entered the fray. Conlan took the first two pitches as strikes before fighting to a 1-2 count. Then on the fifth pitch of the at bat, Conlan went the other way with a shot down the left field line that landed in fair territory. Riley raced home with the winning run giving CSUN its second walk-off win of the season.Â
Earlier in the game, Nunez and Jared Sasaki traded zeroes for most of the afternoon despite the tandem surrendering a combined 13 hits.Â
The Aggies plated the game's first run in the top of the first. Tanner Murray doubled on the first pitch of the game and he later moved up to third base on a groundout. Ryan Anderson would bring the run home on a groundball to the left side to put UC Davis up 1-0.
Nunez surrendered a leadoff walk in the second but he would turn things around in a hurry on the mound. The left hander retired the next 10 batters in a row before giving up a double to Alex Aguiar in the fifth. He pitched around the extra base hit and another two-out hit in the sixth to keep the Matadors within striking distance.
On the flip side, Sasaki's only blemish came in the second inning. Conlan reached on a fielding error from Caleb Van Blake with one out in the frame. A passed ball moved Conlan up to third before Joey Cooper hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.Â
Sasaki retired the Matadors in order just once, in the seventh inning, but CSUN could not come away with the timely hit against the right hander. The Matadors had two runners on base in the first and fourth innings but double plays in each frame ended both rallies. Sasaki scattered eight hits in his seven innings of work as he struck out two batters.
Nunez worked his way into the seventh inning as he retired two of the first four batters in the frame. He would be lifted from the game in favor of Jayson Newman with runners at the corners. Newman hit Aguiar to load the bases but he recovered nicely by retiring Murray for the third out.Â
Newman worked 3.1 shutout innings on the day, scattering three hits. In the ninth, he helped his own cause by picking off Garrett Kelly in between second and third base. Newman also stranded two base runners in the 10th by striking out Anderson and Ryan Hooper. Tei Vanderford, who earned the victory, entered in the top of the 11th and worked a clean frame, setting the stage for Conlan's heroics.
Finishing 2-for-5, Trevor Casanova posted his 21st multiple-hit game of the season as he extended his hitting streak to an even 20 games. Riley also finished 2-for-5 en route to collecting his 13th multiple-hit performance.
The Matadors wrap up their home schedule Sunday afternoon against UC Davis with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. CSUN's home finale will be Senior Day as the Matadors will honor their senior class in a special pregame ceremony. Coverage on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health will start at 12:45 p.m.Â
