LONG BEACH, Calif. - Behind a team-high 20 kills from senior Arvis Greene, the fourth-seeded CSUN Matadors defeated No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara 25-18, 30-28, 12-25, 28-26 in a Big West Quarterfinal match Thursday at the Walter Pyramid.
CSUNÂ picks up its first postseason win in eight years and advances to the conference semifinals where the Matadors will meet top-seeded Long Beach State Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Greene and Dimitar Kalchev contributed a majority of the CSUN offense against the Gauchos as Greene had 20 kills on .364 hitting and Kalchev added 15 kills (.171), three aces and six blocks. No other Matador hitter had more than four kills, although middles Josiah Byers and Eric Chance combined for nine blocks in the win.
Junior setter Sam Porter had 42 assists, eight digs and one ace as the Matadors won despite being out-hit .181 to .169.
The Matadors hit .375 while limiting UCSB to .038 hitting in dominating the opening set, 25-18. CSUN then needed extra points to pull out the second set, 30-28 as the hitting for both teams fell off. The Gauchos bounced back to hit a match-high .444 to easily win the third set 25-12, setting up the fourth set which the Matadors also pulled out in extra points.
"First off I'm very excited with a win," said CSUNÂ head coach Jeff Campbell. "We actually didn't play our best tonight and were still able to win. Hopefully we'll get a little momentum going into the Long Beach match."
The Matadors opened up a 12-8 lead in set one when a UCSB attack landed wide. The Gauchos battled back behind a 5-0 run and appeared to take a 13-12 lead when Greene's attack was called out. But a replay challenge by CSUN resulted in the call being overturned keeping the Matadors in front 13-12. Leading 18-15, Kalchev's kill extended the CSUN lead to 22-17 forcing UCSB's final timeout. After the Gauchos scored on a kill, Greene and Kalchev answered with kills for the Matadors and CSUN sealed the set with a Maciej Ptaszynski ace.
The Gauchos jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and held the lead until a UCSB hitting error put the Matadors in front 11-10. The two teams traded sideouts, forging a 15-15 tie when a pair of Kalchev kills and a Porter solo block gave CSUN an 18-15 cushion. Following a Gaucho timeout, UCSB scored three straight forcing the Matadors into a timeout.
Consecutive UCSB hitting errors gave CSUN another three-point lead at 21-18 when the Gauchos rallied to tie the score at 21. A Greene kill followed by a Chance/Kalchev block put the Matadors up 23-21 and CSUN still led by two (24-22) at set point. A pair of Corey Chavers kills propelled UCSB on a 3-0 run which set the Gauchos up with set point at 25-24.Â
A Kalchev kill saved one set point and the Matadors saved three more set points at 26-25, 27-26 and 28-27 when Kalchev connected again. With the score tied at 28-28, Greene connected on a kill and then Chance stuffed a Gaucho attack on set point putting CSUN up two sets.
Looking to build on the momentum of the first two sets, the Matadors saw the Gauchos score the first five points, eventually opening up a 9-1 lead. The UCSBÂ lead swelled to 16-4 forcing Campbell to turn to his bench for the remainder of the set as the Gauchos won easily 25-12.
The fourth and final set featured 14 ties and six lead changes as CSUN looked to close out the Gauchos. Neither team led by more than two points until Kalchev dealt back-to-back aces, extending a 19-17 Matador lead to 21-17. But a 5-1 UCSB run tied the score for the 10th time at 22-22.Â
Following a CSUN timeout, kills from Greene and Byers set the Matadors up with match point at 24-23. UCSB spoiled that match point along with two others, the last at 26-25, when Greene ended the match with consecutive kills sending CSUN to the Big West Semifinals.
For the Gauchos (11-13), Chavers came off the bench to put down a match-high 21 kills on .385 hitting while Keenan Sanders added 10 (.222).
The fourth-seeded Matadors will meet Long Beach State Friday at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the UC Irvine-Hawai'i match at 5 p.m.
