Julio Rubio scored with 2:41 remaining in overtime to give CSUN a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Big West Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament Wednesday night.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Julio Rubio scored with 2:41 remaining in overtime to give CSUN a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the Big West Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Wednesday night.
Â
Emmanuel Usen Jr. opened the scoring for the Matadors at 4:20 when he finished a Jeremy Degraffenreidt cross from the left side. Usen Jr. and Degraffenreidt teamed again 1:37 later for the second CSUN goal. Once again, Degraffenreidt used a crossing pass to set Usen Jr. up, allowing Usen Jr. to score his 10th goal of the season.
Â
The Hornets got on the board in the 28th minute. Cylus Sandoval pushed a ball ahead to Matt Carnefix. CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig challenged Carnefix who dribbled around the Matadors' netminder to score his third of the season.
Â
The Hornets nearly tied the match 12 minutes into the second half. Tyler Moss had two attempts from inside the five-yard mark. Regitnig blocked Moss' first shot, but the ball came right back out to Moss who again shot from point blank range. Regitnig used all of his 6-5 frame to make the save.
Â
Sacramento State (8-9-2) tied the match with 6:03 remaining in regulation. Carnefix sent a long pass into the CSUN box where Dominic Scotti was able to convert the chance for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
Regitnig, the 2017 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, made a save on a Trevor Jackson shot 1:16 into overtime. Degraffenredit had a chance just go wide a little over a minute later. Degraffenreidt set up the gamewinner with a ball that went across the Sacramento State goal from the right side. The ball bounced off of Usen Jr. to Rubio who was standing in front of the Hornets' net. Rubio was able to settle the ball down and score his third of the season to continue the Matadors' playoff run.
Â
"We wanted to get on the front foot," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "Jeremy is an important part of getting us on that front foot tonight. We decided to go with him over Julio, just to give us a bit of a push. It is a bit ironic that both are (in the post-game press conference) here right now. Julio deserved that goal. No one works harder than him. Julio does not cheat the game and he was rewarded for that tonight."
Â
Degraffenreidt's three assists broke the previous Big West Conference Tournament record for most assists in game of two which was held by six players, most recently tallied by Eduardo Calzada of UC Irvine who posted two against Sacramento State on Nov. 8, 2014. Usen Jr. scored two goals in a match for the third time this season and ties him with five others for the second most goals in a Big West Conference Tournament match.
Â
CSUN (10-8-2) advances to the Big West semifinals where as the No. 2 seed in the South, the Matadors travel to UC Davis (10-7-2) on Saturday. The Aggies won the North Division and had the best record in the Big West this season (7-2-1) and the most points (22). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and can be seen on BigWest.tv.
