NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN Athletics announced today that longtime Dodger broadcaster Ross Porter and radio and play-by-play broadcaster Brandon Marcus will join the CSUN Sports Network to call baseball and softball games this spring. The CSUN Sports Network will air audio streams for all baseball and softball home games, as well as select road baseball contests.
Â
"I am thrilled to be asked by CSUN to announce their home baseball games this year. It's a great chance for me to do what I love," said Porter. "I'm excited to do it for a wonderful university like CSUN and to be associated again with young men who are passionate about baseball. I have been able to spend time getting to know the team and find them to be outstanding young student-athletes."
Â
Porter spent 28 years as the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers and has won numerous broadcasting accolades throughout his storied career, including being selected as one of the top 60 baseball announcers of all time. He was inducted in to the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2005 with Vin Scully, his longtime colleague, giving his induction presentation. Porter also hosted the pre- and post-game radio show DodgerTalk for 14 years and more recently has called football and baseball games on Fox Sports West. Porter's broadcasting career began when he was 14 years old, and since then he has also worked for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, where he worked alongside Tom Snyder and Tom Brokaw, for NBC Sports calling NFL and Pac-8 college basketball games and for UNLV calling men's basketball games. Porter remains the only broadcaster to have been the voice of a World Series champion (the 1981 and 1988 Dodgers) and a college basketball champion (UNLV in 1990). Porter is originally from Oklahoma and currently resides in the San Fernando Valley.
Â
"It's an honor to be selected to represent CSUN athletics as the next baseball and softball play-by-play broadcaster. As someone who grew up in the San Fernando Valley, it will be great to come home and broadcast for one of the local teams in the area," said Marcus. "The baseball and softball programs are both on the rise and I am excited about being a part it all. Lastly, I am very much looking forward to working with a broadcasting legend in Ross Porter and plan on growing even more alongside someone I listened to for many years."
Â
Marcus has spent the past 10 years working as a sports broadcaster in Southern California, and currently is the voice of Cal State Fullerton's men's and women's basketball teams. He also works for NFL.com, producing podcasts and content for several shows and projects. Previously, Marcus served as the Director of Broadcasting and Play-by-Play Broadcaster for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's Single-A Burlington Bees and Rookie Affiliate Orem Owlz. His other broadcast experience includes play-by-play on a closed circuit broadcast with the Los Angeles Clippers, Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's basketball and IBN Sports calling high school football. Marcus graduated from the University of Southern California, where he was the Sports Director of KSCR and a sports and news anchor at Annenberg Television News. He is originally from the San Fernando Valley.
Â
"I'm proud to welcome Ross and Brandon to the Matador family," said CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin. "Ross is a broadcasting legend and Brandon is a experienced broadcaster with a promising career, so we're thrilled to bring them into the CSUN fold. Coach Moore and Coach Flowers are coming off of excellent seasons into even more promising ones, and it's very exciting that our fans will be able to tune in to the CSUN Sports Network to hear Ross and Brandon calling every game."
Â
Porter will call 18 of CSUN's 28 baseball home games this spring, with Marcus joining him in the booth for the team's home opener against CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Feb. 19 at 2:00 p.m. Marcus will call all home softball games and 10 baseball home games, plus baseball road series at Portland, UC Riverside and UC Irvine and road games at UCLA and CSU Bakersfield.
Â
CSUN Athletics also plans to add CSUN Sports Network live game video streams later this spring.
Â
CSUN Baseball enters 2016 coming off of a 33-win season, its highest win total since 2002, and Head Coach Greg Moore enters his third season leading the team. On the softball diamond, Head Coach Tairia Flowers and the Matadors are the reigning Big West Champions, having advanced to the 2015 NCAA postseason. Both coaches spent their off-seasons representing Team USA, with Coach Moore recently leading the U-18 Team to a Gold Medal in the World Baseball Softball Confederation World Cup and Coach Flowers coaching the United States Junior National Team to win the Junior Women's World Championship.
