Junior helps lift CSUN to victory over LMU
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN women's tennis junior Mickey Hsu was named the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after helping lift CSUN to its first win of the season, the conference office announced Wednesday. In a 4-3 victory over LMU in the Matadors' 2016 home opener, Hsu won her top-seeded singles contest in a pair of tiebreakers and teamed with junior Kristen Poei to pick up an important win in the No. 1 doubles draw.Â
"Mickey started off at the ITA Kick Off a little slow and was able to pick up her level to beat an excellent player from LMU. It is nice to see Mickey playing with confidence," CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "She was able to play the big points very well in her singles match. In doubles, Mickey and Kristen got off to a great start and played with confidence. They looked very much like they typically do at the end of the season, which is very strong.
Hsu, originally from Taiwan, helped win a pair of points in the Matadors' victory over the Lions. In singles action, she defeated Jessica Perez 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (5) in the No. 1 singles match to tie the match at 3-3. Her doubles teammate Poei then picked up a three-set victory in the No. 5 draw to give CSUN the victory. For her career, Hsu is 24-19 in singles matches as a Matador.Â
Earlier in the day, Hsu and Poei teamed up to defeat Perez and Anna Romeka 6-2 in the No.1 doubles draw. That, coupled with Mari Taslagyan and Kiryang Kim's victory in the third draw, gave CSUN an early advantage and ultimately the deciding point in the match. As a doubles team, Hsu and Poei are 34-9 in their two-plus seasons at CSUN.Â
Last season, Hsu earned First Team All-Big West honors in both singles and in doubles with Poei. She earned Second Team honors in both singles and doubles with Poei as a freshman in 2014.Â
CSUN returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5 with a 1 p.m. home match against Long Beach State at Matador Tennis Complex.Â
