Matadors Claim Their Second Big West Conference Tournament Title
En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Jeremy Degraffenreidt scored the game-winning goal with 52 seconds left in double overtime to lift the CSUN men's soccer team (9-6-5) to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton and give the Matadors the 2016 Big West Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Edwin Quiroz scored the tying goal to send the Matadors into extra time and Kevin Marquez, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, made three saves as CSUN claimed the conference's automatic berth into the 2016 NCAA Tournament.Â
With less than a minute to play, senior Shane Steffes made a long run up the left side of the pitch, taking on several Titan defenders. He then delivered a pass to Degraffenreidt and the junior one-timed the ball past Cal State Fullerton's David Elias for the golden goal. The goal was Degraffenreidt's second of the year and third of his CSUN career and the assist was Steffes' first of the season.Â
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the second half saw the action increase. With the teams exchanging multiple corner kicks, it was Cal State Fullerton who found the match's opening breakthrough. In the 58th minute, Nicolo D'Amato delivered a corner kick that Alex Heilmann headed home for his 12th goal of the year.Â
Needing an equalizer, the Matadors pressed and nearly found pay dirt as Juan Fernando Samayoa hit the post with a free kick in the 73rd minute. Just a few minutes later, Quiroz intercepted a failed clearance and curled his second goal of the season into the netting in the 78th minute.Â
The teams played evenly the rest of regulation and went into extra time with the golden goal in effect. In the 99th minute, CSUN was awarded a penalty kick when Nicholas Grinde was taken out by Elias on a breakaway on the right side of the pitch. However, he quickly redeemed himself by saving Samayoa's attempt and keeping the game tied. The second overtime was uneventful until the final moments when Steffes and Degraffenreidt combined on the game-winning goal.Â
Marquez finished with three saves in the victory to keep CSUN undefeated (6-0-3) at home in 2016. He made a stop from close range in the 53rd on the Titans' Diego Sanchez and he now has 95 saves, a .798 save percentage and a 1.12 goals-against average for the season. Elias made four stops in defeat for Cal State Fullerton.
The Matadors held an 18-13 advantage in shots for the contest, although Cal State Fullerton produced 10 corner kicks on the evening. The Titans committed 21 fouls to CSUN's 15 and Bar Shem Tov and Heilmann each saw a yellow card.Â
The Tournament Championship is CSUN's second overall and first since 2012. The Matadors will be making their seventh trip the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament and will find out their postseason fate on Monday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. when the field of 48 is announced on NCAA.com. A viewing party on the CSUN campus is slated to start at 9:30 a.m. at The Pub and is open to the public.Â
