NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN men's soccer defender Trevor Morley has been named one of 30 national candidates for the Senior CLASS award, the award committee announced Thursday. Originally from San Diego, Morley has exemplified the four pillars the committee references in compiling the list: character, classroom, community and competition.
"It is an honor to be nominated for this award. Giving back and being involved in my community is something that helps future student-athletes and kids in the community see that being a soccer player goes beyond the work we put in on the field," Morley said. "I am thankful for the opportunities I have gotten from CSUN and the community; the opportunity to play for CSUN and be a student at the university makes me proud and grateful."
A two-time First Team All-Big West honoree (2013 and 2014), Morley anchors a stout CSUN defense that has allowed the fewest goals of all Big West teams since the 2011 season. Since arriving on campus in 2012, Morley has appeared in all 62 contests for the Matadors and has two career assists. He was named to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Far-West Third Team as well.
"Our administrative staff does a tremendous job of organizing and putting together a student-athlete's candidacy so that the committee can identify those deserving of this recognition," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Trevor has put in a lot of hard work since coming to CSUN, both on and off the pitch. We are honored to have him in our program and we are not only looking forward to him having a successful year, but also being a successful person off the field when he is done with his career at CSUN. We are excited for him and his family."
Morley becomes the second Matador in as many years to be named one of 30 Finalists for the award, joining Sagi Lev-Ari (2014). CSUN has also had previous nominations in women's soccer (Cynthia Jacobo, Chloe McDaniel), women's volleyball (Casey Hinger) and women's basketball (Ashlee Guay).
Now that the 30 candidates have been named, a committee will pare the list down to 10 student-athletes sometime in October. At that point, public voting becomes part of the criteria, coupled with votes from coaches and media, in determining the recipient of the award.
Morley, Davila and the rest of the CSUN men's soccer team is currently in Omaha, NE for a pair of non-conference matches, squaring off with No. 3 Creighton (Sept. 4) and Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 6). The Matadors' next home match is slated for Friday, Sept. 11 against New Mexico at Matador Soccer Field with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
