NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior goalkeeper Adam Hobbs made six saves and stopped a penalty kick for the second-straight match in the Matadors' 1-0 victory at San Diego and earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors in the process, the league office announced Monday. Hobbs stopped a Torero penalty kick in the 86th minute of action to preserve the clean sheet and help lift CSUN to a 1-0 victory, its third-straight road win against the West Coast Conference.Â
"I think we are playing some great team defense right now. Everyone has bought in and we are a selfless team when it comes to running down the ball," Hobbs said. "Stopping the penalty kick at San Diego was nerve-wracking. The game was in the 86th minute so I knew I just needed to make that one save. I watched his knees in the run-up and was able to come up with the big save."Â
Hobbs tied his season high with six saves in the victory over USD. He also had six saves at Creighton and at Saint Mary's and owns 30 saves on the season, the second-most among Big West Conference netminders. Â Hobbs also ranks second in the conference in save percentage (.769) and is tied for second with three shutouts. He and the CSUN defense have allowed just one goal in the run of play over their last 512 minutes of action.Â
"Adam was big when we needed him most," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "To be victorious on the road in Division I soccer, your goalkeeper has to make at least two big saves per game and he has come through with several big saves in several different games."Â
In his third season with the program, Hobbs has amassed 25 wins, the fifth-most in program history, and 12 shutouts, the fourth-most in program history. He also ranks fifth with 162 career saves and fourth with 47 games in goal. Last week, Trevor Morley was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week, giving the Matadors back-to-back awards.Â
Hobbs, Davila and the rest of the Matadors will look to open Big West Conference play with a strong showing, hosting Cal Poly on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Two days later, CSUN faces UC Santa Barbara at Matador Soccer Field for a 5 p.m. fixture.Â
