Lawrence Johnson joined the CSUN Track & Field Program as an assistant coach prior to the 2015 season and was named Interim Head Coach of the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs in July of 2017.Â
In past coaching stints at Southern Illinois, Virginia Tech, and Clemson, Johnson has mentored a grand total of five NCAA Champions, amongst a haul of 92 United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-Americans. Â While at Virginia Tech and Clemson, Johnson coached nearly 70 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Champions.
Johnson earned the United States of America Track & Field (USATF) Coach of the Year Award after guiding arguably the most prolific hurdle contingent in the world in 2013, including eventual IAAF World Champion Brianna Rollins, and World Championships qualifier Queen Harrison.Â
The Arkansas alumnus has also been recognized for his achievements in the collegiate community, having been named USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Women's Coach of the Year on a total of six occasions. Johnson is responsible for seven USTFCCCA Academic All-Americans during his coaching carer.
In 2015, Johnson's first season at CSUN, he helped the Matador women claim their first Big West Championship in three years. Additionally, CSUN sent its 4x100 relay to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, ORÂ for the second consecutive season.
In the summer of 2015, Johnson represented Team USA at the IAAF World Relay Championships and he coached three 2016 summer Olympians.Â
Johnson also served as an assistant coach for women's jumps and combined events at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, where Team USA garnered a total of 12 medals, including eight gold.
