Northridge, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's water polo program has built its nationally-ranked reputation with outstanding incoming recruits that has produced 69 wins in the last three years.
That recruiting trend is continuing with the addition of four outstanding high school seniors who will enter the Matador program in the Fall of 2011, according to Matador head coach Marcelo Leonardi.
The three new recruits who have signed national letters of intents this spring are Kelcie Ferreira, Kiernan Davis and Alex Hoetker, who will join Marisa Young who signed with Cal State Northridge in the Fall of 2010.
"The four recruits will make an impact to the Matador program," said Leonardi, who has chalked up a 49-24 record in two seasons as CSUN head coach. "They all bring a specific skill set that we were looking for in order to continue the success of this program - academically and athletically. I am excited to see how these new Matadors will contribute in their freshman campaign (2012) and how they will continue to develop throughout their tenure at Cal State Northridge."
Ferreira is currently the captain of the Trinidad and Tobago Junior National water polo team. Her experience on the national level has led her to be voted the Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player for her country. Ferreira also was voted the best defender at the recent Carifta Championship.
"Kelcie is an all-around player which will allow her to play multiple positions in the water," according to Leonardi. "Her size, speed, athleticism and skill set will make an immediate impact to the CSUN program."
Davis is a goalkeeper who served as captain of the water polo team at Redlands High School. Davis gained numerous honors including All-CIF, All-Citrus Belt League, team MVP and All-Tourney at the Winter Classic.
"Kiernan has the ability to be a great NCAA Division I goalie," Leonardi said of Davis who is currently playing on the Xtreme Water Polo Club in Corona, Ca. "She has a big presence in the cage with her size, leg strength and arm length. She will make an immediate impact in our program."
As a senior at Sunny Hills High School in the Los Angeles area, Hoetker was a first team All-CIF selection, a fifth team All-Southern Section selection, team captain and a two-time MVP of the Freeway League. She is currently playing with the Xtreme Water Polo Club in Corona, Ca.
"Alex is a natural scorer who will provide a boost to our offense," said Leonardi.
Ferreira, Davis and Hoetker will team with Marisa Young, a senior at Fountain Valley High School who signed a national letter of intent last November, 2010. Young, who plays center, earned numerous post-season honors during her tenure at Fountain Valley.
"Marissa brings tremendous size, strength and speed to the center position," said Leonardi. "She has great hands and can finish her shots. We're excited about Marissa's addition to the Cal State Northridge water polo program."
Ferreira, Davis, Hoetker and Young will join a Matador water polo team that will return six of its top seven scorers and its starting goalie from a 2011 team that chalked up a 21-16 record. Whitney Delgado (76 goals), Heidi Pettinger (62 goals), Lindsy Nelson (41 goals), Melissa Doll (34 goals), Leah Janke (28 goals) and Jessica Goforth (25 goals) accounted for 266 of the team's 361 goals in 2011. Dana Harvey returns as the team's starting goalkeeper in 2012. Harvey tallied 202 saves (9.85 spg) this year.
