Northridge, Calif. - The regular season has ended for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team, and now it's time for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) playoffs.
Tournament action starts on Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of San Diego State. All 13 MPSF teams are entered in the tournament. The Matadors (12-17), ranked 15th in the nation, are seeded eleventh in the MPSF tournament and will face sixth-ranked Arizona State (20-10) on Thursday at 12:40 p.m. The Sun Devils are seeded sixth, and earlier this year in Tempe, ASU recorded a 12-5 victory over CSUN. Kristin McLaughlin led the offensive attack for Cal State Northridge with two goals.
The winner of the CSUN-ASU game will advance to the championship round on Friday at 2:30 p.m. against third-seeded and third-ranked USC. The loser of the CSUN-ASU game will play on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. against the loser of the California-Long Beach State game.
All 13 teams competing are guaranteed three games in the MPSF Tournament. Tournament play continues through Sunday.
Matador sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Stapf has been named MPSF Player of the Week along with ASU's Addison McGrath. Stapf combined for 34 saves in two wins on the final day of the regular season last Sunday. Stapf stopped 14 shots in the MPSF win over UC Santa Barbara, and then tied her career-high with 20 saves against Cal State San Bernardino. The 20 saves was also a single-game high this year for any MPSF goalkeeper.
Stapf has collected 251 saves in 28 games this year, an average of 8.96 saves per game. That is third-best in the conference. In two seasons at Cal State Northridge, Stapf has collected 599 saves, only 164 short of the school record held by Graziella Caredda (2003-06). Stapf will have two more seasons after this season.
Two-time All-American Allison Brookes continues to lead the Matadors in scoring with 43 goals. In four seasons at Cal State Northridge, Brookes has tallied a school record 215 goals. Other double-digit scorers are Jessica Coy (35), Chelsea Curran (32), Dayna Van Gorder (26), Renee Gargiiulo (20), Kirra Kylander (18) and Kristin McLaughlin (16). MPSF Tournament Schedule
