Irvine, Ca - The nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge water polo team split two games during second day action on Sunday at the UC Irvine Invitational.
In the first game of the day, the 17th-ranked Matadors defeated 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 8-7. Cal State Northridge had the lead throughout the match and was able to hold on to the victory in the fourth period as UCSB got within one goal with 44 seconds remaining.
The Matadors featured a balanced attack with six different players scoring at least one goal. Renee Gargiulo and Dayna Van Gorder each tallied twice.
In the second game of the day, 15th-ranked Michigan edged the Matadors, 6-5.
Michigan took a 2-0 lead just under four minutes into the match as Leah Robertson scored for the Wolverines. Cal State Northridge tied the match at 2-2 as Tara McGinley scored with 5:12 left in the second period. Michigan would add two more goals to go up 4-2 with 3:50 left in the opening half. CSUN would outscore Michigan 3-2 the rest of the way, but would be unable catch the Wolverines in the end.
