Feb. 4, 2011

Northridge, Calif. - Cal State Northridge, ranked 13th in the nation, returns to non-league competition on Saturday (2/5/11) when the Matadors compete at the Cal Baptist Invitational.

Cal State Northridge will play three games during the one-day tournament. At 9:00 a.m., the Matadors face Azusa Pacific. Then at 1:00 p.m., CSUN faces Claremont-McKenna Scripps followed by a 5:00 p.m. contest against Concordia College (Ca).

The Matadors are 1-3 after competing two weeks ago at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor. CSUN's, ranked 15th in the nation at the time, chalked up its lone win with a 6-5 decision over then 13th-ranked Indiana. Heidi Pettinger and Sydney Sonoda each scored two goals while goalkeeper Dana Harvey, a transfer from Arizona State, chalked up a career-high 21 saves.

Sydney Sonoda claimed the first Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week award for the 2011 season after the senior scored a combined eight goals against four nationally-ranked opponents at the Michigan Invitational.

Sonoda recorded a pair of hat tricks, the first in a season-opening game to eighth-ranked Michigan and then against fourth-ranked UCLA. Sonoda scored two goals against Indiana including the go-ahead goal.

Sonoda's eight goals for the four-game, two-day tournament increased her career total to 98, the eighth-best mark in Cal State Northridge history. Sonoda also drew 12 ejections and had four steals in the four games.

Heidi Pettinger is second on the Matadors in scoring with six goals followed by Chelsea Curran and Whitney Delgado with four goals apiece.

Nicole Concaldi and Dana Harvey have shared time in the net. Concaldi has played in three games (80 minutes) with 29 saves. Harvey has played in two games (48 minutes) with 24 saves.
