#15 Cal State Northridge Defeats #13 Indiana, 6-5

Ann Arbor, Mi. - Two goals each by Heidi Pettinger and Sydney Sonoda helped propel nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge to a 6-5 victory over 13th-ranked Indiana during first day action on Saturday at the Michigan Invitational.

The tightly contested match was tied at halftime (4-4) and at the end of the third period (5-5).

Dana Harvey, a transfer from Arizona State, started in goal for the Matadors and collected 21 saves.

Earlier in the day, the Matadors opened its 2011 season with a 14-8 loss to eighth-ranked Michigan.

This eight team tournament features seven nationally-ranked teams including #1 Stanford, #4 UCLA, #6 Loyola Marymount, #8 Michigan, #13 Indiana and #14 Hartwick. Cal State Northridge is ranked #15 in the pre-season national poll.

The Wolverines jumped to a 4-1 first period lead, but the Matadors fought back to cut the deficit to only two goals at halftime, 5-3.

Offenses on both teams took center stage in the third period with Michigan getting six goals compared to four for the Matadors.

Five different CSUN players scored at least one goal. Sydney Sonoda led the attack with three goals while Heidi Pettinger chipped in with two.

On Sunday, Cal State Northridge faces sixth-ranked Loyola Marymount at 5:25 a.m. (pt) followed by a 12:50 p.m. (pt) contest against fourth-ranked UCLA at Canham Natatorium.

Loyola Marymount beat #13 Indiana, 13-5, on Saturday, but later in the day suffered a 14-1 loss to top-ranked Stanford. UCLA, meanwhile, beat Colorado State, 15-6, followed by a 14-3 verdict over #14 Hartwick.
