Irvine, Ca. – A bright sunny day for women's water polo and two of the best teams in the nation kicked off second day play on Sunday morning (8:00 am) when tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge faced fifth-ranked UC Irvine at the UCI Invitational.
Despite a 3-1 lead for the Matadors in the second period, UC Irvine fought back to earn a 7-6 overtime decision.
Lindsy Duncan, Molly Henehan and Celena Photopulos pushed the Matadors to a strong start. Duncan and Henehan each scored in the first period while Photopulos added a goal in the second period for the two-goal CSUN lead.
Cal State Northridge led at halftime 3-2.
Marisa Young's goalie off the hand of the UCI goalie gave the Matadors a 5-3 lead in the third period. But Anteater goals by Jessy Cardey and Destene Albers tied the game at 5-5 entering the final period.
A backhand goal by McKenna Mitchell gave UC Irvine its first lead of the game, 6-5, in the fourth period. However, with 3:58 to play, Duncan scored her second goal of the game to tie the contest at 6-6.
Neither team could score in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.
There were no goals for either team in the first overtime.
An outlet pass to Albers led to an open Mitchell on the side of the cage to give the Anteaters the only goal of the second overtime and the 7-6 win.
Cal State Northridge had a pair of chances with less than 24 seconds to play, but couldn't convert.
