La Jolla, Calif. – Kelcie Ferriera scored the winning goal with two seconds to play to lift 16th-ranked Cal State Northridge to a dramatic 9-8 victory over 13th-ranked Indiana during first round action on Saturday morning at the UC San Diego Invitational.
In the second game of the day, the Matadors fell to top-ranked and defending NCAA champion USC, 13-0.
Against Indiana, the Matadors enjoyed a 7-4 lead midway through the fourth period. But the Hoosiers mounted a rally that cut the CSUN lead to 7-6 with 6:28 remaining in the game.
Katie Kammer's goal at 4:48 of the fourth period gave the Matadors a seemingly safe 8-6 lead. But back came the Hoosiers with two straight goals in the next 4:30 minutes to tie the game at 8-8. The tying goal came with only 13 seconds remaining in the game.
But Ferriera netted the game winning goal with only two seconds on the clock to give the Matadors a 9-8 victory.
Kammer, making her first appearance of the season, scored a game-high three goals for Cal State Northridge.
Kiernan Davis had nine saves.
