Santa Barbara, Calif. – Cal State Northridge, ranked 14th in the pre-season CWPA (Collegiate Women's Water Polo Association) women's water polo poll, opened the 2014 season on a successful note on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 23-10 victory over Whittier College at the 2014 UC Santa Barbara Water Polo Invitational.
The 23 goals is a school record. The old mark was 22 goals against La Verne during the 2012 campaign.
Marisa Young scored five goals to lead the Matador attack. Ten CSUN players scored at least one goal. Seven players scored at least two goals.
Cal State Northridge scored six goals in three of the four periods to race to victory.
Tournament action will continue on Saturday night (6:20 pm) when the Matadors face third-ranked UCLA.
Sunday action finds CSUN facing #20 Pacific at 10:20 am followed by a 2:00 pm contest against Cal State Monterey Bay.
