San Diego, Calif. – Cal State Northridge lost both games during first day action on Saturday at the Aztecs Invitational at the Aquaplex on the San Diego State campus.
On Saturday afternoon, the Matadors, ranked 13th in the nation, dropped an 8-5 decision to Princeton University. The Tigers are ranked 12th in the country.
Both teams played to a 2-2 tie after the first period. However, Princeton shutout the Matadors, 2-0, in the second period to take a 4-2 halftime lead. The Tigers extended the lead to 7-3 after three periods.
The Matadors began the Aztec Invitational on Saturday morning. For the fourth time this season, Cal State Northridge played UC San Diego in women's water polo.
Earlier this year against UC San Diego, CSUN scored a 13-6 victory (1/26/13) at the UCSB Invitational, a 9-7 decision (2/10/13) at the UCSD Invitational, and a 9-6 verdict (2/24/13) at the UC Irvine Invitational.
However, the #17 Tritons scored a 7-6 victory over the #13 Matadors.
After CSUN took a 3-1 lead with 3:55 left in the second period, thanks to two goals by Marisa Young and a score by Melissa Doll, UCSD's Sarah Lizotte scored three straight goals and Alexis Wieseler added a goal to give the Tritons a 5-3 lead with 4:06 left in the third period.
Celena Photopulos chipped away at the UCSD lead with a goal at 3:18 of the third period to make the score, 5-4, in favor of UC San Diego.
However, Wieseler added her third and fourth goals in the fourth period to give UCSD a 7-5 lead.
Photopulos scored with ten seconds left in the game to make the final score … UC San Diego 7, Cal State Northridge 6.
The Matadors will continue play on Sunday with a 9:15 am contest against Bucknell followed by a 12:30 pm contest against Indiana.
